The “Elect”

This post focuses on the elect and their purpose. The Oxford Languages defines the elect as a person chosen or singled out. Merrian-Webster defines it as carefully selected: chosen for salvation through divine mercy.

In the Bible, there are three verses that talk about the elect. To begin,

Romans 8:33 NIV records it like this, “…who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen?”

Then in 2 Timothy 2:10 NIV, “Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory.”

And finally, in Matthew 24:22 NIV, it expresses this thought, “If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the sake of the elect those days will be shortened.”

Then one would ask, what is the purpose of the elect that they are preserved?

The purpose of God’s elect is for them to be people who are chosen for salvation, and therefore to serve as the light of the world. The Bible calls them “Salt.” (Matthew 5:13). That means they will live holy lives and spread the gospel of good news in the world. They are individuals who, through personal transformation, achieved by reading, studying, and applying the Word of God in the Bible, and with the help of the Holy Spirit, through God’s grace, are enabled to defeat the devil and his demons. Thereby ensuring that the world is aware of the saving grace of Jesus Christ.

It is now up to the world to yield to this saving grace.
