The two people we will focus on are Jesus Christ, when he was tempted by the devil in the wilderness, and David. In Matthew 4:10, we see an encounter between Jesus and Satan, and in 1 Samuel 17, we are given the encounter between David and Goliath.
When Satan presented himself before Jesus in the wilderness, he came with the intent to usurp Jesus of his position. Satan showed Jesus all of the kingdoms of the world and offered them to him in exchange for bowing down and worshiping him, the Devil. Of course, Jesus refused the offer because he knew who he was and knew that, because he is the Son of God and was sent to Earth to redeem mankind from sin and death, he was fully capable of gaining all the kingdoms of the world without any plotting from Satan. Jesus knew that in the end, he would go back to heaven and sit at the right hand of God, mediating for mankind.
Moving on to David’s story, in which he had to deal with the giant Goliath, David was able to face and defeat Goliath only because he believed that Goliath was dishonoring God, as shown in 1 Samuel 17:10, where Goliath said, “This day I defy the armies of Israel. Give me a man and let us fight each other.” King Saul and the Israelites were dismayed and terrified by his words, and even more so when David gladly accepted Goliath’s challenge. For forty days, Goliath took his stand. But David would not accept such disgrace. He spoke up, “Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God?” (1 Samuel 17:26) And he told Saul, “Let no one lose heart on account of this Philistine; your servant will go and fight him,” (1 Samuel 17:32). Goliath cursed David by his God when he stepped out for the fight, boasting that “I will give your flesh to the birds and the wild animals!” (1 Samuel 17:44) David simply replied, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hands, and I will strike you down and cut off your head.” (1 Samuel 17:43-49). In verse 49, David defeats Goliath.
At this point, I conclude that whatever battle you are going through, it is the enemy of the believer’s destiny trying to disrupt the plans of the Lord. Therefore, the bible enjoins us to put on the whole armor of our faith and stand. Ultimately, the battle is the Lord’s, and He always triumphs.
