Before departing from the world, Jesus spoke to his disciples, “And I will ask the Father and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever,” (John 14:16). This was a clear message to the disciples that they will still be helped in their salvation journey, though Jesus will not be with them physically.
Remember, Christ came to earth to redeem humanity from a world of sin and to reconnect mankind with Almighty God. He succeeded in his mission.
The advocate he spoke about is the Holy Spirit. Christ in John 14:26 describes him in this manner, “But the advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”
Nowadays, according to Romans 8:26, the advocate does so much more. He said, “In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.”
However, the disciples at the time of Jesus’ departure did not want him to leave. In John 16:7-11, he explained why he had to, “But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin, because people do not believe in me; about righteousness. After all, I am going to the father, where you can see me no longer; and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.”
